ABSTRACT
The adsorption of methylene blue (MB) on three soil amendments, red mud from Hungary, red mudfrom UK and beringite from Belgium, was studied to determine the surface areas of the amendments usinga 0.005 mol L-1 NaCl solution and deionised water as background solutions. The surface areas determinedby the methylene blue method in the 0.005 mol L-1 NaCl solution were 3.357, 2.340 and 5.576 m2 g-1 forred mud (Hungary), red mud (UK) and beringite, respectively slightly lower than those in the deionisedwater system. The largest surface area of beringite suggested that the MB could adsorb effectively on theinterlayer surface of illite. The effect of NaCl on the surface areas was relatively small and may therefore beignored. Both the 0.005 mol L-1 NaCl solution and deionised water could be used as a background solution for measurement of surface area of oxide-rich materials.
