Effect of plant–plant interactions and drought stress on the response of soil nutrient contents, enzyme activities and microbial metabolic limitations
2023, Applied Soil EcologyCitation Excerpt :Global warming has altered the amount and patterns of precipitation in the 21st century in many parts of the world, leading to prolonged droughts (Dai, 2011; Hao et al., 2018). Drought stress might alter the interactions of plant species, thus potentially changing the cycling of carbon and nutrient elements in terrestrial ecosystems (Mganga et al., 2019; Preece et al., 2020). The impact of plant–plant interactions on soil nutrient status and soil microbial enzyme activities under drought stress would facilitate our understanding of how plant communities will respond to future global warming scenarios.
Mixed grass species differ in rhizosphere microbial community structure and function response to drought compared to monocultures
2022, RhizosphereCitation Excerpt :Our results supported these previous findings. Moreover, Mganga et al. (2019) demonstrated that drought stress decreases the substrate affinity and catalytic efficiency of rhizosphere enzymes, both of which are important for substrate decomposition and nutrient cycling. Future studies should evaluate enzyme kinetic characteristics in the rhizosphere to elucidate biogeochemical cycling in different planting systems and soil water regimes.
Stabilization mechanisms of isotope-labeled carbon substrates in soil under moisture pulses and conservation agricultural management
2020, GeodermaCitation Excerpt :Most of the recovered glucose-C in soil was in the form of microbial biomass when soil was dry. Although increases in microbial biomass have been observed with drought (Mganga et al., 2019; Sanaullah et al., 2011; Schaeffer et al., 2017), the mechanisms are largely unknown. Suggested mechanisms include microbial resource allocation (Schimel et al., 2007) and osmotic acclimation (Borken and Matzner, 2009; Harris, 1981; Schimel, 2018; Warren, 2014, 2016); however, further studies and direct evidences are needed to confirm these mechanisms.
