Abstract

There is a need for determinations of soil organic carbon (SOC) and inorganic carbon (SIC) due to increasing interest in soil carbon sequestration. Two sets of soil samples were collected separately from the Yanqi Basin of northwest China to evaluate loss-on-ignition (LOI) method for estimating SOC and SIC in arid soils through determining SOC using an element analyzer, a modified Walkley-Black method and a LOI method with combustion at 375 °C for 17 h and determining SIC using a pressure calcimeter method and a LOI procedure estimated by a weight loss between 375 to 800 °C. Our results indicated that the Walkley-Black method provided 99% recovery of SOC for the arid soils tested. There were strong linear relationships (r > 0.93, P < 0.001) for both SOC and SIC between the traditional method and the LOI technique. One set of soil samples was used to develop relationships between LOI and SOC (by the Walkley-Black method), and between LOI and SIC (by the pressure calcimeter method), and the other set of soil samples was used to evaluate the derived equations by comparing predicted SOC and SIC with measured values. The mean absolute errors were small for both SOC (1.7 g C kg−1) and SIC (1.22 g C kg−1), demonstrating that the LOI method was reliable and could provide accurate estimates of SOC and SIC for arid soils.

Thin sections were examined under a polarized light optical microscope (Olympus DX-50, equipped with a Nikon D7000 digital microphotography system). Soil organic matter (SOM) content of 17 different fractions of 3 alluvial soil samples collected by surface coring (down to 3–4 m) was calculated as the weight loss after combustion (Wang et al., 2013) of 5 g of alluvial soil dried. Permeability of 19 colluvial soil samples (from a depth of 20 cm) and 15 alluvial soil samples (from a depth of 20 cm) was estimated adopting the procedure suggested by Barnet et al. (2008) from the weight percentage of fine fraction (<63 μm).

The standard reference material (SRM) of DH-1a was analysed by the same procedure as the sample and the yield activity of 210Pb ranged in certified value at 30800 ± 900 Bq/kg, with its chemical recovery at about 94%. The organic matter procedure mentioned by several researchers was used (e.g., Ishii et al., 2017; Wang et al., 2013), where homogenised sediment was taken at 0.5 g for combustion at 550 °C for 4 h for an organic matter estimate. The activities of 210Pb in the Kelantan River (n = 28) range from 2.7 ± 0.46 Bq/kg to 52.07 ± 5.23 Bq/kg (Table 1), while the activity of 210Pb for the Pahang River (n = 44) ranged from 8.65 ± 3.56 Bq/kg to 83.04 ± 6.71 Bq/kg (Table 2).

The granulometric analysis was done by sieving lyophilized sediments in a series of Tyler sieves between 2 cm and 63 μm for 10 min. Total organic carbon content (TOC) of the sediments sampled in 2016 was measured by Walkley-Black titration, according to Wang et al. (2013). TOC of the sediments collected in 2018 was analyzed by a TOC-L total organic carbon analyzer coupled to a combustion unit to solid samples SSM-500A (Shimadzu) as described in Viana et al. (2019).
