However, increased PTE mobilization in soil resulting from biochar application depends on the type of biochar, soil conditions, and PTE species (Igalavithana et al., 2017a, 2017b; Shaheen and Tsadilas, 2010). Therefore, selecting a type of biochar suitable for remediating soils contaminated with multiple PTEs requires careful examination.

2020, GeodermaCitation Excerpt :In this way, we will investigate the manner in which experimentally obtained sorption constants for heavy metals are affected by soil properties and experimental conditions. For MLR analysis, experimentally determined Freundlich equation coefficients, logKF and n, of Cd and Pb were collected from previously published studies (Buchter et al., 1989; Cerqueira et al., 2013; Chang et al., 2001; Covelo et al., 2007; De Oliveira et al., 2018; Hooda and Alloway, 1998; Janetti et al., 2012; Jiang et al., 2012; Li et al., 2011; Liao and Selim, 2009; Ming et al., 2016; Mouni et al., 2009; Ramachandran and D’Souza, 1999; Razek, 2014; Sayyad et al., 2010; Shaheen, 2009; Shaheen and Tsadilas, 2010; Vega et al., 2009; Wan et al., 2010; Wong et al., 2007; Zhou et al., 2018). The compiled dataset included the Freundlich equation coefficients (logKF and n), soil properties (pH, CEC, soil organic matter content (OM), and sand, silt, and clay contents), and experimental conditions for the batch sorption experiments (liquid–solid ratio (LS), maximum initial concentration of Cd or Pb (C0), background electrolyte concentrations for univalent and divalent cation salts (BG1 and BG2, respectively), and experiment time (ET)).

Although PTEs sorption in SS-amended soils has been thoroughly investigated [11–16], the effect of innovative materials such as zeolite and bentonite and nano-metal oxides on metal sorption of SS-treated soils has not been sufficiently elucidated. Our scientific hypothesis is that the addition of zeolite and bentonite and nano-metal oxides to an alkaline soil treated with different types of SSs may change soil characteristics such as SSA, functional groups, sorption sites and may increase soil capacity to retain PTEs in both the mono-metal and competitive sorption systems.

2019, Environment InternationalCitation Excerpt :Though FA contains a certain amount of trace elements including Cu and Zn, it was reported that FA application does not increase the concentration of heavy metals in the tissue of a variety of plants (Shaheen et al., 2014). Instead, FA is capable of immobilizing metals due to its alkalinity and high contents of silica, alumina, and iron oxides, which are strong metal sorbents (Adriano et al., 1980; Shaheen and Tsadilas, 2010). There are two basic mechanisms of metals sorption (non-specific and specific sorption).
