Variability and determinants of soil organic matter under different land uses and soil types in eastern China
2020, Soil and Tillage ResearchCitation Excerpt :Gathering firewood resulted in the reduced biomass return to the soil, which in turn lowered the SOM level. The lower SOM contents in woodlands could also be the result of preferential selection of the most “naturally fertile” lands, (e.g., floodplains) for intensive agriculture, thus, the current woodlands in the study area were likely to be naturally poor soil or converted from abandoned croplands with degraded soil (Jiao et al., 2010). Soil OM contents in unused lands were the lowest among all land uses since the unused lands were mostly barren with lower vegetation cover and little litter return and the surface soil had long been exposed to erosion (Yang et al., 2018).
Land inundation and cropping intensity influences on organic carbon in the agricultural soils of Bangladesh
2019, CatenaCitation Excerpt :Land use changes have profound influences on the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils (Virto et al., 2015). Long-term experimental studies have confirmed that SOC is highly sensitive to land use changes from native ecosystems, such as forest or grassland, to crop lands, (Conant and Paustian, 2002; Jiao et al., 2010). Soil management practices, particularly those in intensive agriculture have a considerable impact on soil carbon, resulting in its decline due to reduced inputs of crop plant residues and their increased mineralization due to tillage (Ghimire et al., 2017; Hydbom, 2017).

2017, CatenaCitation Excerpt :Besides, anthropogenic factors such as type of land use and management decisions can permanently alter the variability of these soil properties within a relatively shorter time period (Barrios et al., 2015; Sun et al., 2003). For example, Jiao et al. (2010) and Yao et al. (2010) reported relationships between the type of land use and the spatial distribution of soil organic carbon and texture, respectively. However, to our knowledge the short-scale variability of the soil properties in relation to the land use at the catenary level has not yet been studied.
Spatial distribution of soil total phosphorus in Yingwugou watershed of the Dan River, China
2016, CatenaCitation Excerpt :Village grassland is almost always present on steeper slopes and in other areas where conditions are poor. Moreover, the lower STP mass of grassland is generally the result of previous unsustainable agricultural use (Jiao et al., 2010). It is possible that STP levels in the soils of the less mature grasslands are in the process of accumulating to higher levels than would occur in cropland in the same locations (Wei et al., 2014).
