2014, Atmospheric EnvironmentCitation Excerpt :The analysis was carried out by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) on Harmattan dust filters from the same batch as those analysed by Mössbauer spectroscopy for this report. In previous reports from XRD analysis, by Adetunji and Ong (1980), Stoorvogel et al., (1997) and Abe et al., (2009), the major bulk mineral composition of the Harmattan dust identified is quartz (∼70%), montmorillonite and kaolinite, but no illite in some samples, most likely because it is poorly crystalline. However, illite has been identified in the samples analysed by the Mössbauer technique in the present work, reaffirming the advantage of the method.

Inland valleys have specific characteristics that offer high potential for rice production (Abe et al., 2009) one of which is that they can be divided into a lowland part (where gravity irrigation is practised), and an upland part where farmers can grow either rainfed upland rice or apply irrigation (using pumped water) (Fig. 1). In the latter case farmers can select between an upland rice variety (usually with a short growing cycle, e.g. Nerica-4) and a lowland variety (usually with a longer growth period, e.g. IR-841).

Rice can easily yield 30–50% more on the fertile inland valley soils than on the upland soils [30]. The main advantage of improved maintenance of the irrigation system is expected to be that water levels on the rice fields can be controlled more accurately and that the water reaches the upstream fields under the gravity system.
