2016, Regional Studies in Marine ScienceCitation Excerpt :In view of the above, new remediation strategies need to be sought, and better understanding of the influence of environmental factors on PAHs persistence is demanded. Several works provided evidence that plants (planted soils or vegetated sediments) increase PAHs removal rates (Binet et al., 2000; Liste and Alexander, 2000; Lu et al., 2011; Redondo-Gómez et al., 2011; Xu et al., 2009). Vegetation significantly alters sediments composition, increasing their organic matter (OM) content, promoting aeration and fostering microbial activity (Martins et al., 2008).
