Eutrophication levels increase sulfur biotransformation and emissions from sediments of Lake Taihu
2023, Science of the Total EnvironmentPhenolic root exudates enhance Avicennia marina tolerance to cadmium under the mediation of functional bacteria in mangrove sediments
2022, Marine Pollution BulletinCitation Excerpt :Generally, plant tolerance to heavy metals depends on phytodetoxification strategies, such as promoting the synthesis of intracellular antioxidant enzymes and secondary metabolites (e.g., phenols and organic acids), scavenging reactive oxygen species produced by intracellular Fenton reaction under heavy metal stress (Bakshi et al., 2018; Chen et al., 2019); improving sulfur uptake, assimilation, intracellular synthesis of sulfhydryl-containing biomolecules, and inhibiting the translocation of heavy metals to maintain cellular environmental homeostasis by forming metal chelates (Xie et al., 2019). Mangrove sediments are characterized by high sulfur, iron, organic matter contents, and oxygen-poor, which lead to abundant ligands, proper redox potential for the sequestration and immobilization of heavy metals with Fe-Mn oxides, organic matter, and sulfide (Ferreira et al., 2010; Yin et al., 2008). And the dynamics of heavy metals binding to ligands in sediments are mainly regulated by plant root activity, microbes, and their exudates (Wu et al., 2019; Zhang et al., 2018).

2022, Environmental PollutionCitation Excerpt :The concentrations of TS, AVS and SO42--S were determined using the method described by He et al. (2018). The TFe concentration was detected as described by Yin et al. (2008). The detection limit for COD, TN, NO3−-N, NH4+-N, TS, SO42--S, AVS, TFe and TP are 0.2, 0.02, 0.06, 0.1, 0.01, 0.5, 0.003, 0.01 and 0.03 mg L−1, respectively.
